The next morning was the first at my new job as a glorified errand-runner, and as I delivered orders of coffee and bagels to the offices at the Camelot, I kept expecting Cristos to just show up somewhere like he had been for the past week. I had to keep reminding myself that he was out of town for a few days.

I kept thinking about what happened between us the night before, and why I told him ‘no’ even though there was nothing on earth I wanted more in that moment than to have him naked and in my bed. Part of it was the no kissing thing… that much I was clear on. I was good enough to have sex with, but not good enough to kiss, and yeah, that bothered me… a lot. But I also kind of understood. It was his way of protecting himself. If he held something back from the women he was with, something as basic and intimate as a kiss, then he effectively took away their power to hurt him.

Obviously, he had been hurt in the past, severely enough that he avoided relationships and didn’t easily trust. Trust would come with time, I supposed, if we ended up having time. It was all those unanswered questions that plagued me. There was a lot more to Cristos Vicario than I knew about, and the question remained, was I willing to gamble my pride and dignity on a man that might just grind it into the dirt? Ugh! I had never been so conflicted in my life!

On the second day that Cristos was away, I mailed envelopes and sorted paperwork at the Camelot, and by noon I was finished and curled up on my bed with my computer and my thesis. That was when I received a box of the most decadent dark chocolates I’d ever tasted, delivered to the door of my hotel room by a well-dressed man who looked ridiculously out of place standing in the dingy hallway. Inside the box there was a hand written note.
